concept for poem

Concept- I chose this poem because me and my twin would go back and forth with each other saying it when we were younger. I took the concept of the knock knock joke in the beginning and made it literal. After that I wanted to show the argument between the two through a door. I wanted to used real people but I couldn’t get them to look right even buying masks didn’t help. So I went back to what I knew, Shel’s strength is not creating a realistic character but one children can relate to. I wanted to make a book that would be fund for kids and allow them to use their imagination to take the poem to a new level like me and my sister.

Teun Hocks and Ellen Kooi

Hocks uses gelatin silver prints. Kooi uses color and motion to create subtle surrealism. Both do artwork that has a surreal feel to it. Gave Biography on both artists. Kooi art shown : Veslen- Slootmist, Monte Sibilini- Rim, Alphen a/d Rijn- Waterkant, Overveen- Kilf, Lissabon- Tree

Whitney Museum Comparison

The two artists I chose to compare were Alex Hay and Mike Kelly. Alex Hay created Paper Bag in 1968 out of fiberglass, epoxy, paint, and paper. The piece Paper Bag was purchased with funds from Friends of the Whitney Museum American Art. He has participated in the Biennials or Annuals in 1968, 2004. Paper Bag was included in the 1968 Annual/Biennial. Alex Hay took the everyday object of a paper bag and made it larger, more important.
The other artist was Mike Kelly who created More Love Hours Than Can Ever Be Repaid created in 1954 and The Wages of Sin created in 1987. The work More Love Hours Than Could Ever Be Repaid is made up of stuffed fabric toys, afghans on canvas with dried corn. The Wages of Sin Is wax candles on a wood and metal base. These works were purchased with funds from The Painting and Sculpture Committee. The artist has been featured in the following Biennials: 1985, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1995. The piece More Love Hours Than Can Ever Be Repaid consists of things that would offer comfort to most people. Afghans are blanket creations handmade with many hours spent on them. The stuffed animals are toys that have probably gotten more cuddling from a child than most will see in it's lifetime. The make up of The wages of sin is using fire to shape the wax on the table. This has taken lots of time and associates sin and fire (to hell).
Both use commonly found household items. Alex Hay creates a household item and makes makes them larger than life as if to signify their importance. Mike Kelly uses common household items but they take on a whole new meaning and significance in his works.

concept for self visualization

my concept for my self visualization is have 3 pictures of myself doing/feeling the 3 ways i am the most i am either constantly studying, trying to relax, or something has me stressed out and I am depressed or upset. Then I want for two of the works to surround myself with the people that are causing these feelings whether it is happiness sadness stress or whatever, and my final piece I want them to actually be me I want to accomplish this by doing something similar to chuck close and graph out my image and then use their photographs to recreate my image or become the background.

Lillian Schwartz and Robert Lazzarini

They had biography. They showed Lillian's works: Mona-Leo, Night Scene, and 2 videos Pixiation and UFOS. Roberts work shown was Teacup, Gun, Knives, Skull, Violin, Phone, Chair, Pay Phone, and Hammer. The presentation was done by Kristen and Josh.

Lynn Hershman and Marina Ambramavic

subtitled Dangerous Beauty
Gave a Biography of both artists
Their presentation was more like a story of the artists work. They told of the artist self mutilation, challenges against figures like the FBI and social norms. All the work shown was very controversial based on what can and can't be done. They would show the slides and tell about them. This was Cassie's and Julie's presentation

Masiki Fujihata and Perry Hoberman

The presentation discussed how the artists dealt with viewer interaction, included a biography of the aritsts. It included the Art works Portray the Silhouette, Timetable, Beyond the Pages, Cathartic user Interface, an Unreflective Mirrior which was one of my favorite pieces where the viewer wears special glasses and sees nothing but the glass and their body in the the mirror, Zombrac Acrinime, Mersea Circles, Faraday's Garden. They ended the presentation in a quote. done by Allision and Johann

3 artists

Marina Abramovic, Frida Kahlo, and Cui Xiuwen

Abramovic uses her body as the subject in her works. Her works are mainly photos of her body or exhibits where she is the art and is testing the endurance/limits of her body. Her work is interesting because every piece seems to convey a different expression, as if she is almost trying to capture that. While flipping through the set of 20 images of her works, the varying scenarios ranged from crying as if one’s heart is broken to two people screaming in a heated debate into each other’s mouths to another that shows the two in a full blown make out session. These works seem to tell a story but also have other works spacing them out, like a photo of her in military garb in the middle of children dressed the same. In this work however, the artist seems out of place. She is the only person wearing shoes, is the biggest person in the work, and is the only person to not have a gun. The work leaves the viewer questioning what the message behind it really is. Many of her other works also do this, such as one where she is lying on the floor cut up with the message in blood saying both art and artists need to be beautiful. She is making a deliberate contradiction because she is taking her attractive form and cutting herself apart to make it become “ugly” and challenge the idea of beauty.

Frida Kahlo’s work comes mostly in the form of self portraits. Her work is infused with her heritage and surrealism. The work displays ethnic costuming and strong cultural traits. The strong eyebrows are one of these traits. In many of the works the person can be a man or woman, either way they are self confident in themselves. She is what stands out in the work, not the abstract background, the animals, and the costumes. She has a sense of power; the viewer’s eye is drawn to her immediately. All the works seem to have a strong sense of contrast. I get a sense of fantasy but at the same time, realize she is exposing her past to us like showing events of her life that made her stronger.

Cui Xiuwen uses a model, rather than herself, as the subject in creating works. Her works seem to focus more on the young, Chinese, vulnerable woman. One of her series is about a pregnant woman. Almost all of her works take on a sexual, whimsical nature. She likes to play with angles and layers of her pieces; she will have the same model in one work over a dozen times. It is almost like she is using the model to create at pattern on the work for the viewer’s eye to follow. This artist will play with proportions and make the body parts all different sizes as a way of finding new ways to look at the body.

All these women create strong works of art, but they all have different styles. Abramovic is a performer/digital artist. She performs at many museum exhibits and displays photography. Her work expresses raw emotion and leaves the viewer unsure of what is actually going on in the work. Frida Kahlo also has this feeling due to the surreal aspects of her works like a head within a head, her face on an animal body, and other odd things. She justified this by saying that, “I do not paint dreams… I paint my reality” (from the Frida Kahlo official site). Most of her works are oil paintings, and they are self portraits. Her work is more abstract than the other two and has the most cultural traits in the work.

In all the works Kahlo’s face is very similar and strong, yet she seems to show only one self confident strong emotion. The last artist is Cui Xiuwen, she works mostly with photography and video. This makes her more like Abramovic medium wise. However, she, unlike the other two, uses a model rather than herself in creating the art, so she puts herself in a different category. Also, she uses lots of Chinese architecture in the background, so that shows, in some way, her work is similar to Kahlo who also uses architecture sometimes. Xiuwen is different from the other two artists because she doesn’t try to make the model appear strong. She does the opposite. The model appears young and vulnerable. Almost all of her work has a sexual theme and deals with some aspect of beauty. All of these artists throughout their career have questioned beauty. Abramovic went with cutting herself apart to make a statement to question whether the artist and art has to be beautiful in order to be art. Kahlo shows us that the dark strong eyebrows/unibrow can be beautiful or how one can over come a car accident and that too can be beautiful. Then, Xiuwen shows us that pregnancy can be elegant and serene.

Concept for First Assignment

My idea is to take the landscape and use it as the setting of a 2-D (fighting) videogame, it will need to be ajusted slightly to fit the view. Then I will cut myself out of the other 2 images, make myself smaller and put one image on either side of the screen to give it the appearance of a vs. videogame. In this case it will be Gaelen play arcade mode versus the computer. This scene is right before the two characters fight.

class mates

It was quite interesting to see what the other students thought of the 4 artists. I was interested that some people had very contrasting views on the 4 artists. Most students seemed to like the same two artists, and found my personal favorite alittle bland (Cindy Sherman). I enjoyed seeing what inspires the other students and look forward to seeing their work.

4 artists

Gregory Crewsdon: his work contains landscapes and very few living creatures in the work. When the artist does add humans to the work they are often understated and have a sense of belonging to the work or blending in the piece. A lot of his works has an empty feeling that causes the viewer to question what is going on.
Teun Hocks:This work uses humans but uses it in a way that adds interest in the piece. I like the work because it has a quirky sense that makes the viewer really stand up and notice. Unlike the previous work (Crewsdon's people were understated) the people pop out of the work and intrigues the viewer because they are interested in the story behind the work.
Jeff Wall: His work places things from everyday life together to create a scene that the viewer can relate to. He uses real life in an inovative way such as the wind blowing away papers from a person or showing the effects of war. He also chooses to play with color. It is chosen deliberately based on the message he is trying convey.
Cindy Sherman: I love her work she uses the concept of feminism and displays women in different lights. She uses black and white rather then color to express her message. There is one piece that shows a woman outside in the city, demonstrating how women had to go get jobs when the men left to fight in WWII.

Taokaka

This is Taokaka She is a cat person from the video game called Blazblue. She is the humor character in this video game which is a cross between street fighter and guilty gear. All she cares about is food and naps and is willing to do most things for them. The reason I chose this image is because she is a carefree spirit and is very easy going and easy to please. I resemble her in a couple of ways as well as the fact that I dressed up as her for Halloween. I love the creativity that was put into the game and the story line and often include fan art, anime, and simply drawing for fun as part of the artwork that I create.

about me
